Set on a site that was once part of the state's second-largest military training installation during the Civil War, Camp Butler National Cemetery holds the remains of soldiers and prisoners of war dating back to the 1860s. Since then, the cemetery has also become the site for graves of soldiers up until the Vietnam War, as well as German and Korean POWs. There are a few subdued monuments and memorials to various groups of soldiers, including a carillon. The cemetery is located a few miles northeast of Springfield, near the town of Riverton.
